In the past 2 weeks, at last count, we’ve submitted over 317 written complaints/letter/concerns (about SOPA) from American followers of DrDocumentary.com/.ca to United States Senators Marco Rubio and John Cornyn, as well as http://americancensorship.org, http://thepetitionsite.com, https://sendwrite.com/sopa/, and The Center for Democracy and Technology.
Under our parent organization we currently run 9 internet websites, 5 of which are rather successful, some of which will be affected. DrDocumentary.com could certainly fall victim to experiencing so called “blackout/blacklisting” in America if this law was to pass. The law dictates that someone can be fined/imprisoned if they were to make just a “LINK” to illegal or ‘suspected illegal’ material (what ever that means!), on youtube or a third party, even if the material has been illegally, or again “suspected illegally’, uploaded by SOMEONE ELSE. Under these laws, Even posting a copyrighted song/download/video/picture on your facebook, or a friends facebook wall, could constitute a fine, deletion of accountt, or possible imprisonment under this law. Even if someone sends YOU an illegal song/download/movie/pic you could be held criminally responsible.
With American entrapment laws the way the are, this could also lead to the FBI and ‘Tech’ Cops setting up illegal downloads/download sites, for people to download material. After one downloads this “illegal” material they can send a fine (via your internet provider) or inform local police to criminally charge you for downloading THEIR fictitious links/videos/etc. Scary huh? Many think this will close facebook, google, and youtube, and it definitely could, with millions even billions in fines for these companies. This is a definite possibility. It is not as yet clearto the effects this could have on these site, However, chances are they will have the budget to make the transition, while many many other sites simple won’t have the resources.
Now add all that information along with the new cross border policing laws Canadian Dictator Stephen Harper has pushed through parliament as of late, and Canadians can (and will be, dont kid yourself!) taken from their country by the FBI, brought back to America, held indefinitely, prosecuted fined/jailed. Scary stuff, Right? Spread the Word!
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke out against the legislation, Zuckerberg wrote:
“The internet is the most powerful tool we have for creating a more open and connected world. We can’t let poorly thought out laws get in the way of the internet’s development. Facebook opposes SOPA and PIPA, and we will continue to oppose any laws that will hurt the internet. The world today needs political leaders who are pro-internet. We have been working with many of these folks for months on better alternatives to these current proposals. I encourage you to learn more about these issues and tell your congressmen that you want them to be pro-internet.”
Besides Facebook, many of the largest internet companies on the planet are vehemently against this law including: Wikipedia, Twitter, Flicker, PayPal, Youtube, Google and Cheezburger, DRDOCUMENTARY, CanadaFonts, FiveAlot and countless others!
What we have done here @Dr_Documentary is not alot, but hopefully it does help. Since beginning to ask our American viewers on DrDocumentary.com for formal written complaints, and after sending them out to numerous intermediaries, Both Marco Rubio and John Cornyn (original sponsors of the bill!) have renounced their support for this draconian law. Please HELP US to continue to spread this IMPORTANT message. Forward it!!! Thanks!
Dont Settle for what the government will allow you to be shown, viewed, or seen. This Act does not address piracy, rather it is the planned destruction of both of our civil liberties and the free & open internet we have become so accustomed to.
